Description for case is given below :
This case pertains to the foundational underpinnings of the accounting process and the statement of cash flows. In Part I, students are presented with 23 business events that they must evaluate for recording in the financial records. Part II requires students to prepare a 2012 statement of cash flows using the information presented in the company’s 2011 and 2012 year-end balance sheets along with its 2012 income statement. In Part III, students must rely on a 2011 balance sheet and a 2011 statement of cash flows to work backward to derive the 2010 year-end balance sheet. There are two versions of this case: Option 1 and Option 2. The Option 2 case is a bit more challenging than the Option 1 case. Instructors should use Option 2 if they feel students are well grounded in their understanding of financial statement relationships and the customary financial reporting of a typical set of business events. Both cases reinforce students’ learning related to the accounting process and the connectivity between the financial statements. Please note that only one version of the case should be used due to the existence of some overlap between the two.

Description for case is given below :
The co-founder of CardSwap.ca sat at his desk in the Toronto office from which he managed the company. CardSwap was an online service that provided consumers with the opportunity to convert unwanted gift cards into hard cash. The co-founder felt convinced that his small Canadian company created great value for its customers. After all there were around a billion dollars of unwanted gift cards entering circulation every year. People who owned these unwanted gift cards would surely want to use the CardSwap service. CardSwap could offer a strong value proposition to consumers while ensuring a healthy return through commissions on every transaction. Problems remained however CardSwap was a relatively small company and had no access to the multi-million dollar advertising budgets that might be needed to get a message out to consumers through an extensive multi-media strategy. How much should the company be willing to spend to acquire a customer? How best could this new company use its limited resources to communicate to customers the benefits that CardSwap had to offer?

Description for case is given below :
Franklin Resources Inc. is one of the largest and most respected global fund houses with a presence in India. The case highlights the structure, investment process and philosophy of its fund management team in India. The case presents the specific issue of fund managers holding large amounts of cash during market downturns. There is one school of thought that attributes lower volatility and better risk-adjusted returns with high cash holdings. The other school of thought believes this approach goes against the philosophy of investment management. It believes people give money to fund managers to invest, not to hold in the form of cash. A fund should always be fully invested or nearly fully invested. The chief investment officer at Franklin Templeton India is of the second school of thought and is faced with the challenge of convincing a team of young analysts and managers of its soundness. He presents a set of data to this team and asks them to analyze performance during periods of market downturns in order to arrive at a conclusion.

Description for case is given below :
Bill Young, president and CEO of MTI was in Victoria, BC at the time of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Bill knew that his Seattle, Washington-based market research firm faced numerous challenges in the aftermath of the attacks. The economic turmoil which was certain to follow a national disaster of this magnitude would have a serious impact on the business. This was particularly true since reliable market research depended heavily on consumer confidence and perceptions about the future. Young was unsure how to respond to the challenges he faced. Bill Young is attempting to develop revised cash projections and to determine whether staffing cuts and other cost-saving measures will be needed in order to maintain the financial health of the firm.
