Ho Tak Kee, originally a professional publisher and printer that started back in the 1950s in Hong Kong, faced static performance for decades. This forced the founder and grandfather of the family to decide to close down the printing department. This decision pushed his youngest son, On-ping, to a critical point resolving whether and how to continue the family business. Under pressure, On-ping turned to his son John for support but the request put John in a difficult position of choosing between a professional career and the family business. As a young man without much life and work experience, John had to go through a personal development process to shape up as a leader to be able to make the family business thrive again and keep the family together, while formulating his entrepreneurial vision for the future of the business and family. Case (A) runs from John’s point of view as his is making his decision and is intended to stimulate students to look at a family business from a third generation’s perspective. Case (B) starts with John’s decision to join Ho Tak Kee.

Description for case is given below :
Founded in 1997, Kalamandir was established in one of the poorest tribal areas in India to revive tribal dances and arts and generate livelihoods. It was now active in over 114 villages and its activities had helped increase the incomes of over 2,500 households. Despite strong achievements, much more would have to be done to make a substantial improvement in the lives of tribal villagers in Jharkhand, an impoverished region of India. The question was how to scale the activities and induce socio-economic development in a sustainable way. How could livelihood opportunities associated with arts, dance, culture and handicrafts be broadened while strengthening the region’s core agricultural income? How could the local leadership pool in villages be expanded and what mechanisms could be introduced to minimize conflicts or resolve them faster? How could Kalamandir attract dynamic professionals? Which government and private organizations did it have to develop stronger relationships with in order to access the financial resources it needed to grow?

Description for case is given below :
Seventh Generation is a leader in the niche market for “green” household cleaning products in the U.S. It enjoys a unique reputation, strong branding, and fast growth. In 2008, while Seventh Generation is looking for ways to expand its customer base, its executive management is approached by Marketside, a subsidiary of Walmart set up to tap into the “green” market. The potential market that Seventh Generation could access through this partnership is enormous. But so is the risk of being associated with a retailer that has been heavily condemned in the past for its poor environmental and social record, and which Jeffrey Hollander, cofounder and chairman of Seventh Generation, has been publicly criticizing for many years. He must weigh the pros and cons of this opportunity, evaluate the risks, and make a decision on whether to accept Marketside’s offer.
