This case allows students to analyze the impact of rate changes in a purchase-of-service system. One conclusion is that these systems function as communication media whereby the public sector signals its priorities to the private sector (the service providers). The situation being analyzed is one in which the public sector wishes to establish a one-time payment for the completion of a given task-an adoption-which will eliminate the ongoing cost of foster care for the adopted child.

Description for case is given below :
The case explores value-driven strategy formulation and implementation by bringing to the fore issues of ethics, responsible leadership, social intitiatives in emerging markets and the global-local tensions in corporate social responsibility. It examines how Bayer CropScience addressed the issue of child labour in its cotton seed supply chain in rural India between 2002 and 2008. Bayer had been operating in India for more than a century. In December 2002, the Bayer Group completed the acquisition of India-based Aventis CropScience. Bayer CropScience first learned about the incidence and prevalence of the child labour in its newly acquired India-based cotton seed operations a few months post acquisition, in April 2003. The Aventis acquisition had brought onboard a well-known Indian company, Proagro, which already had operations in the cotton seed production and marketing – a new segment of the supply chain for Bayer. Child labour was widespread in cotton seed production – a traditional practice taken for granted not only by Indian farmers but also by several hundred Indian companies then accounting for approximately 90 per cent of the market share. The (A) case focuses on Bayer’s decision whether, when and how to launch a self-run program that would take direct responsibility for tracking and eradicating child labour in rural India.

Description for case is given below :
In February 2009, the additional director at the Child In Need Institute (CINI) received the most challenging assignment that CINI’s board of governors had ever given him – to prepare a comprehensive proposal recommending whether the organization should continue as a non-government organization (NGO) driven primarily by donations and grants, or should venture into social business. He had a month to give his recommendations. CINI was a reputable 37-year-old NGO from Kolkata (Calcutta), India, with a mission of “sustainable development in education, protection, health and nutrition of child, adolescent and woman in need.” Over the years, CINI had fought child malnutrition through health clinics and educating mothers, and had provided shelters and a path to betterment for street children. Despite recognition at CINI that donor funding was becoming scarce, any proposed social business was controversial because it ran the risk of alienating existing donors and replacing CINI’s existing purpose with a profit motive. This case has global relevance, as the challenges that CINI met in 2009 are faced by thousands of social enterprises across the world.

Description for case is given below :
In 2002, Brazilian-based Petrobras joined the Argentine fuel retail (gas stations) market. The venture faced several challenges. On the one hand, Argentina was undergoing one of the most severe economic and social crises in history. On the other, the local fuel market was dominated by a few players with brands that held significant consumer mindshare over many years. Additionally, employee morale at Eg3, the company acquired by Petrobras to enter the local market, was besieged by uncertainty and disillusionment as a result of a string of mergers and acquisitions and underlying H.R. management remoteness. Finally, the company’s Brazilian origin could jeopardize its appeal for Argentine consumers, given the cultural and sports-based (soccer) rivalry between these neighboring countries. The case presents this scenario and calls for decisions as to which market segment(s) it should target, how it should brand its stations, and what other related marketing decisions it should make given it domestic and international ambitions. This case received the 2007 Curtis E. Tate Jr. Award for the best case published in Case Research Journal and is also available in Spanish and Portuguese versions.
