Description for case is given below :
In May 1998, the director of Research at Zeus Asset Management is reflecting on the current performance evaluation of Zeus’s mutual funds (which include an equity fund, a bond fund, a balanced fund, and an international fund) and ways to improve the measurement of performance. Zeus has become increasingly aware that absolute returns, or relative returns (returns relative to a benchmark), will not suffice as a measurement of performance and that a measurement (or a series of measurements) of risk-adjusted performance must be added. Performance evaluation is key to structuring compensation and incentive schemes in general, as well as strategic planning for the company’s future. Given Zeus’s relatively risk-averse clientele, the “correct” measurement of risk is imperative. Students are asked to compute several measures of risk-adjusted performance. Familiarity with running regression models in Excel is required; alternatively, the case can be used to pursue that objective. The case comes with an Excel spreadsheet containing the relevant data (time series of returns [net of risk-free rate] of three mutual funds and corresponding benchmark indices).

The case introduces students to the nature of collateralized debt obligations (CDO) and the CDO origination process, with emphasis on the corporate structure of the special purpose vehicles, cash flows to various CDO tranches, and motivation behind CDO origination. Students will learn to quantitatively evaluate the risk-return profile of CDO tranches with emphasis on the equity tranche (also known as “toxic waste”). This is ideal for MBA and advanced undergraduate level courses on financial markets, financial institutions, and investments. In the case, an associate at the Debt Capital Markets desk of Lehman Brothers prepares a CDO issuance for Western Asset. Western Asset had been contacted by a group of commercial banks eager to sell senior secured bank loans and high-yield corporate bonds to lower their capital requirements and free up capital for additional lending.

Description for case is given below :
In early January 2008, a senior VP with LAAMCO, a fund of hedge funds known for alternative investments, was conducting due diligence on an equity market-neutral hedge fund. The hedge fund used an option strategy known as a collar (also known as a bull spread or split-strike conversion). The track record of the hedge fund had been stellar. The fund’s performance had not only beaten that of the S&P 500 Index over the same period but had done so with much lower monthly return volatility. As part of the due diligence, it was necessary to backtest the collar strategy and try to quantify how much value the manager, BLM Investment Securities, LLC, (BLM) had added. The case is a disguised representation of an actual hedge fund-the true identity of BLM is revealed to students at the end of the case discussion.

Description for case is given below :
After a two-year absence from the financial industry, Tom Henne evaluated his options and determined that he could exploit his knowledge of the inner workings of pension fund business and start a new firm, Equinox Asset Management (Equinox). Despite a recent article that decried the ability of pension funds to provide returns that did no more than mirror the average index, Henne believed his fund could beat the market or achieve alpha. He proposed that this success could be had by differentiating the Equinox fund in several ways from the typically large and well-branded funds of banks and insurance companies. Thinking he still had significant time to mull over the details, Henne was surprised to receive a phone call from a local company wanting him to do a presentation on Equinox at their offices. Henne had only one week to decide the size of his fund, finalize his fee structure, identify his positioning and marketing strategy, and evaluate an appropriate client base. But most of all, he wondered whether the idea for his fund was even plausible.

Description for case is given below :
Andy Lewis was the fourth-generation publisher and editor of a small family- owned newspaper in rural Mississippi. Lewis faced the challenges of operating a weekly newspaper in a changing industry amid concerns that members of the next generation of the Lewis family did not want to take on operation of either the 133-year-old newspaper or the family-owned insurance agency. The family firm leader is conflicted because he sees himself as both a steward of a family business as well as a steward of an important community asset. Although Andy had successfully managed the paper and the insurance agency and earned a good living for himself and provided for the needs of his family, he believed that he had paid a high price in the sacrifice of his time to achieve these results. The case examines alternative successors to Andy Lewis as editor and publisher of the newspaper; the economic, organizational, and logistical challenges associated with operating a rural weekly newspaper; and the role that an ancillary business played in generating revenue.
