Description for case is given below :
This case pertains to one of the most important topics in financial accounting and reporting: revenue recognition. It is intended for use in a required MBA financial accounting course or in an MBA elective course in Financial Reporting and Analysis. The company, Better Buy, Inc., is an electronics retailer selling TVs and other electronic products. The company is a bit unique, however, in that it not only sells major brand TVs, but also TVs under its own brand that carry a one-year warranty for which the retailer-not the manufacturer-is responsible. The company also offers an additional two-year warranty on its TVs that also is the sole responsibility of the retailer. The case asks students to address a number of revenue recognition situations along with the associated expenses. These situations include a product sale where the sales price also includes a warranty provision, a “bundle” of a product sale and an extended warranty sale, and a bundle of a product sale and an extended warranty sale where the company has an agreement to outsource the servicing of its extended warranty service.

Description for case is given below :
Olam International, a publicly listed firm, was a leading agri-business with an integrated supply chain. To sustain growth, the company took on large amounts of debt to fund acquisitions and other capital expenditures. A hedge fund issued a Sell recommendation, highlighting the problems facing the company, including several years of negative free cash flows. The heated exchange between Olam and the hedge fund led to a government investment fund, Temasek Holdings, first backing Olam, and then eventually offering to buy out the minority shareholders. This scenario presents an excellent opportunity to apply the discounted cash flow analysis and relative valuation techniques to evaluate Temasek’s offer.

Description for case is given below :
A month after Best Buy Inc. (Best Buy), the largest retailer of consumer electronics in the United States, acquired Five Star, the third largest retailer of appliances and consumer electronics in China in May 2006, the management of Best Buy is weighing in on a branding option. Should Five Star lose its identity and be marketed as Best Buy? Or should Best Buy retain the Five Star brand and let the two brands compete with each other in the Chinese market? The option has a sense of déjà vu because, when it first stepped out of its home turf in January of 2002 by acquiring Future Shop, the largest consumer electronics retailer in Canada, Best Buy was facing a similar dilemma. The company had decided, at the time, in favor of dual brand strategy. It had worked. There was no evidence of cannibalization, the single largest risk in dual branding. Best Buy and Future Shop had both grown together as independent brands in Canada. But, does dual brand strategy work in the vastly different retail environment of China?

Description for case is given below :
Jaime has been searching for several weeks to buy his first car. After narrowing his choices down to two, he couldn’t decide which car to purchase. Option A is to buy the Honda CRV, which met many of Jaime’s functional criteria (e.g., all-wheel drive, large trunk space, plenty of seats, etc.). Option A is quite appealing to Jaime because he could use the car for his work, go on road-trips with his siblings and weather the Wyoming climate. Option B is to buy the Ford Mustang, a car that he has been in love with ever since he was a teenager. Even though the Mustang did not necessarily meet any of his functional criteria, Jaime loved the idea of driving his dream car. Given these two options, Jaime is struggling to make a decision. Should he go with the car that meets his functional needs or should he go with the car that meets his affective needs? That is, should he go with his mind or his heart? Jaime wants to buy his car tomorrow. Help him.

Description for case is given below :
As her boyfriend’s birthday was fast approaching, Ashley struggled to make a decision on what mp3 player to buy him (Kade) as a gift. After failing to acquire her first desired choice, Ashley narrowed her selection down to two different mp3 models. Option A was to buy the Creative Zen Stone Plus, which was recommended by her boyfriend’s best friend; a friend who knew Kade’s personality and character very well. Ashley believed Kade’s friend would be a good source to ask for recommendations, as he would have a better knowledge over Kade’s interests and preferences. Option B was to buy the Rio Carbon 5, which was recommended by the salesman, who claimed to be an expert in mp3 players. She felt somewhat relieved hearing from an expert, as she did not know much about mp3 players. Given these two options, Ashley struggled to make a decision. Should she go with the suggestion offered by the friend? Or should she go with the suggestion offered by the expert? Should she go with her “interpersonal advisor” or the “expert advisor”? Ashley had to make the decision today, and she was running out of time.

Description for case is given below :
Rait Kalda, vice president of operations for AS Estonian Air, faced a challenge: how should Estonian Air address projected increases in intra-European flight demand in light of high fuel costs, competitive challenges, economic uncertainty, and last year’s net loss? If Kalda’s assessment led to expanding Estonian Air’s fleet, he had to decide which plane model would achieve operational efficiencies, satisfy load factor requirements, and meet various other performance and financial metrics. In order to fully comprehend Kalda’s challenge, the case first presents the reader with a brief synopsis of Estonia’s economy; the airline industry; and the three types of competitive airline industry groups- legacy carriers, low cost carriers, and regional carriers. This is followed by an overview of Estonian Air’s competitors and its opportunities for growth. The case provides detailed information regarding the advantages and disadvantages of the Boeing 737 Jet, the Bombardier Q400 Turboprop, and a used Saab 340A turboprop. Finally, the case summarizes Estonian Air’s internal analysis and growth strategy, with pertinent input from conversations between Rait Kalda and the vice president of finance and administration, Andrus Aljas. Students are required to complete an operational analysis on factors such as capacity, fuel savings, and utilization rates. If Estonian Air does indeed decide to expand, the case states that the airline will continue with its past practice of leasing the aircraft. Using current financial statements, as well as information presented in the case, students can also prepare a basic net present value (NPV) model and scenario analysis for leasing each of the aircraft alternatives. Finally, students have the opportunity to combine both qualitative and quantitative factors to support their analysis.
