Description for case is given below :
Lewis Byrd, a partner in the private equity firm Opportunity Capital Partners, is managing a number of interconnected issues. First, in his role as investment professional responsible for the firm’s investment in a doghouse manufacturing company called Dogloo, he has to manage a relationship with an entrepreneur who has behaved in a way that has made co-investors nervous about his skills as a CEO. The CEO, Aurelio Barretto, is a Cuban immigrant who has established a close confiding relationship with Byrd, who is an African American. Barretto has increasingly relied on Byrd to run interference for him with the other firm, while providing the strategic advice that typically supports an investor-entrepreneur relationship. Another issue is that there is a potentially costly lawsuit looming involving copyright infringement by a larger, well-funded competitor in the pet products market. Byrd has to manage potentially volatile relationships, while determining what’s best for his firm from an investment standpoint and how best to advise Barretto to proceed. The case provides insights into the challenges in private equity investing that occur after the striking of the financial deal. The case also provides information for students and the technical and legal structure of private equity financings.

Description for case is given below :
Given widening bid-ask spread for a target stock, a small Australian portfolio manager considers front running the market makers by posting its own quotes inside the spread. Organized in a series of rounds, the case asks students to post bid and ask limit orders for shares. Each round allows orders to come in that execute against the limit order book, cash flow and end-of-round inventory to be calculated, and the market to revise the bid and ask quotes for the next round. This structure starkly illustrates the tension for market makers between bid-ask spread profits and inventory trading uncertainty.

Description for case is given below :
Lumina, a foundation focused on increasing both access to and success in higher education for U.S. students, is dealing with the recent resignation of its chief investment officer. The CFO reviews the structure the firm has in place to manage its $1.1 billion endowment. Although the CFO and other finance and administration professionals at Lumina are temporarily overseeing the endowment, Maas recognizes that many other foundations outsource this responsibility to investment advisory firms. As part of his review, he invites a number of firms-including CornerStone Partners, from Charlottesville, VA-to make presentations to the Lumina management team. While each firm claims the ability to outperform its benchmark, Maas wonders exactly how the outsourcing would add value, and how this outperformance could be quantified.

Description for case is given below :
This case investigates the issues involved in a private equity (PE) firm’s decision to invest in the debt of a distressed leveraged buyout. The analysis has been purposefully simplified to involve only two classes of outstanding debt, senior debt and junior debt, so that students do not need to have detailed knowledge of the bankruptcy process to complete the analysis. The main analytical task requires students to compute the expected internal rate of return for two debt-investment strategies. This case has been successfully taught in a second-year elective course covering entrepreneurial finance and PE, and in an undergraduate course on PE. The case is appropriate for use in classes on PE, debt restructuring, advanced corporate finance, or deal valuation.

Description for case is given below :
This case considers the process of organizational transformation undertaken by Partners Healthcare System (PHS) since the 1990s as their hospital and affiliated ambulatory medical practices have adopted both EMR and CPOE systems. Encompassing a strategic investment in information technologies, wide-spread process change, and the pervasive use of institutional clinical decision support and knowledge management systems, this story has been 15 years in the making, culminating in 2009 with the network-wide use of EMR and CPOE by all PHS doctors. These developments in turn opened the door to the redefinition of services delivery and to the replacement of established therapies through the leveraging of the knowledge residing in 4.6 million now-digitized PHS patient records. As such, the PHS experience serves as a window into how one organization strove to address the daunting challenges of 21st century health care services information management, as a template for success in the implementation of large-scale information systems among research-based hospitals across the United States, and more broadly as a learning platform for industry executives in their efforts to transform health care delivery through data and knowledge management.

Description for case is given below :
The managing director and operations director of the Thailand manufacturing arm of a Taiwan-Thailand joint venture (JV) were experiencing severe difficulties. Transferred to Thailand from Taiwan three years ago, they shared management responsibilities with other Taiwanese expatriates, two North Americans, and a few Thai supervisors. The workforce was predominately local Thais. The performance of the company was not meeting the expectations of either of the JV partners, a problem especially acute for the managing director, whose father was chairman of the Taiwan partner’s holding company. Problems included high turnover, changing roles with the recent departure of the American firm originally in a 3-way partnership, intercultural communications, and general confusion as to what to do. The purpose of the case is to develop a process for defining the problems and planning appropriate action in a complex international milieu.

Description for case is given below :
Michelle Morris, a partner at Kelman & Beaton, Partners at Law (K&B), was upset after a conversation she had just had with her two partners, Jack Beaton and Josh Kelman. Over the past few months, Morris and Kelman had become frustrated with Beaton’s performance. Beaton appeared to have been dedicating increasing amounts of his time to a second business and less to the progress of the firm. Beaton had also taken a rigid stance against the firm’s strategic direction. To make matters even more complicated, Morris and Kelman both had personal relationships with Beaton – Kelman and Beaton had been close friends since childhood, and Morris was Beaton’s cousin. Morris wondered how she should handle this difficult situation.
